The Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) leads the European Commission’s activities in the Defence Industry and Space sector. DG DEFIS is in charge of implementing the EU Space programme which consists of three pillars: Earth observation, localization and navigation as well as secure connectivity.

Taking into consideration the EU Space Unit’s desire to communicate about its programmes and the public’s needs to experience in action and to understand how these programmes apply in practice, the project of the interactive cylinder’s construction was born.

We developed the concept of the interactive cylinder display. The construction consists of two full LED cylinder-shaped structures combined with a circular top LED screen. For the purposes of the project, we also crafted an interactive application under Unity, linked to small supersonic sensors and to an Arduino board to enable interactivity.

The idea was to display informative video content about EU Space programs and their benefits like a well of knowledge, where you could discover more and more as you go, and offer a movement-based, real-time, interactive and visually breathtaking experience with stars, nebulae, satellites and space objects -and why not everyone’s very favorite, supernova events! This way the user is educated on the content and allowed to “play” with the satellites of the EU Space fleet.
