The client & the mission

The Single European Sky ATM Research Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) is the European partnership responsible for modernising air traffic management across Europe. Through research, innovation and large-scale deployment activities, SESAR JU contributes to making air transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable.

One of the challenges faced by SESAR JU is that many of the systems, procedures and operational innovations it develops remain largely invisible to the general public. The objective of the SESAR Digital Experience was therefore to illustrate, in a concrete way, how SESAR JU contributes to the future of air transport. What is usually abstract — air traffic management systems, protocols, operational innovations — becomes tangible, spatial and understandable.

A phygital experience

SESAR Solutions is a phygital experience, combining a physical component with a digital one.

The installation is built around a 3D-printed airport model equipped with integrated video tracks. This physical setup is complemented by a digital layer delivered through an Apple Vision Pro headset: through augmented reality, the model comes to life and reveals a whole range of processes that are usually invisible to the average passenger, processes made possible thanks to the work of SESAR JU.

Animations unfold on and around the airport, guided by audio explanations and additional visual elements, illustrating in a concrete way how SESAR JU contributes to making air transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable.

The experience is designed to be used autonomously, without the need for human mediation. Easy to deploy, it was conceived to travel: trade fairs, institutional events, diplomatic meetings.

It made its debut at TRA Budapest before being presented at the European Parliament.
