The Single European Sky ATM Research Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) is a public-private partnership responsible for the coordination and concentration of all European Union (EU) research and development activities in Air Traffic Management. We have a framework contract with the SESAR JU and we basically make all their digital and innovative initiatives a reality, which we enjoy a lot since they always get super challenging!

The SESAR JU wished to conduct a number of activities in the area of digital communications, to promote their work in several strategic areas and introduce its new initiative the U-space. U-space is a set of new services relying on a high level of digitalisation and automation of functions and specific procedures designed to support safe, efficient and secure access to airspace for large numbers of drones.

We created a full augmented reality application to demonstrate U-space through an interactive city-scale scenario. The experience began with an introduction to current drone uses before allowing users to follow the itineraries of four different drones through an imaginary city. Installed on two tablets and connected to a custom-built 85 cm x 85 cm interactive table — the magic cube — the AR application used a printed city map with visual markers and QR-code triggers to activate 3D animated sequences. This portable installation made U-space tangible, playful and accessible for public and professional audiences, and was designed to travel internationally, from Europe to Japan.
